Just noticed this in A Scandal in Belgravia, during the Christmas party when Sherlock is deducing the present in Molly’s bag for her ‘boyfriend’ and John knows straight away it’s for Sherlock and looks really sad for her.

Not only sad but terrified that Sherlock was about to rip her apart.

John sees more than he’s given credit for.

I hated it when John talked to Dean

I feel like a shit again

and to just think how much dean cares for baby, how he keeps her in tip-top shape, he won’t let sammy drive it, how although her mileage is sky-high and she chugs down a hella petrol which gets costly, and how he fixes her up himself, all sweaty and tired, but caring for her nontheless…

i thought i was the only one who hates john more than any other asshole of a character on the whole of the show

It physically pained and enraged me in “As Time Goes By” when Dean said that his father “did the best he could”. Like… no, I understand that Dean looks up to his father, but his father treated him like shit. His father was abusive, left him alone to fend for himself for days, and put revenge before his family every single time. It’s like the only thing that keeps Dean looking up to his father or speaking nicely about him in any way is the fact that he’s still scared of the memory of John. So he defends John’s book, gets snappish at the person who left John, and says he did the best he could. The show even validates this love by having Castiel say that he had beautiful handwriting.

But really, would it kill Dean to once think badly about his father? Dean is clearly his own man now; he hardly clings to the memory or teachings that John Winchester set for him. He’s not this walking piece of machismo anymore. He’s not the soldier who shoots first and asks questions later. Would it seriously be too much to ask for, for Dean to own up and recognize how terrible a person his dad was to him? How he was abused and hardly cared for at all? How much rage his father had, how much of a drunk and a villain he was? Dean keeps thinking that he has to think well of his father, when he doesn’t. He doesn’t have to, just because he’s his father.

If I agree with Sam on anything, it’s how I feel towards John. Sam’s rage towards their father is completely justified; he saw every day the pain Dean went through to care for him, to look after him, and how much their father didn’t. He watch John set pedestal after pedestal on Dean, have all these standards to live by or so help you if you didn’t. He saw how much John only wanted to get back at what killed their mom, instead of hold onto the family he still had. He watched Dean, in his fear and admiration, obey his father and live up to his expectations, because the alternative was too much. And he resented it. Sam never wanted to be that. He never wanted to bend to this man who treated these two kids so unfairly.

Just… I can’t ever like John. He infuriates me, enrages me, and everything I see about him is terrible. The way he treats Dean, the way he treats Sam, the way the boys treated both him and his memory…it all screams abusive behavior, and a man who never appreciated just how great his two kids really were.

If you’re seriously asking why Dean can’t pull John off that pedestal he put him on, then you had the luck of having a healthy, lucky childhood. (No offense, I envy you that.)

My stepmother was abusive, I don’t look up to her any more, and I definitely live my own life right now, being who I am and not what she wanted me to be. I see what she did to me and my sisters all these years. And yet, I can still - to a degree - accept that she did what she could.

Believe me when I say that a parent “did what he/she could” is the most obvious evidence of incapacity for his/her parenting.
